This public artwork was designed by a team of Alvarez High School students during the Fall and Summer of 2017. The title “What is your story?” relates to how our students sought to understand the stories of this community and their fellow high school peers. A series of community visits gathered input about the neighborhood and the role of art in public places. Asking Alvarez students and staff about their life joys and challenges provided additional input. The final design grew out of art-making directly informed by life’s ups and downs. This process was led by teaching artist Anna Snyder, with community engagement assistance from Margie Butler, fabrication by The Steel Yard/Weld to Work Program, and support from Marta Martinez and The Southside Community Center.
